Teacher are paid better now, and get compensated for extracurricular work. That, at least, has changed (although check any blog string that includes the word “teacher” and see the abuse heaped on teachers and the unions for wrangling this improvement). They also have some job security – tenure has eliminated such abuses as the case (true story) of a beloved music teacher in a small town in Delaware in the ’50s who was summarily fired because a school board member’s daughter had just graduated with a degree in music and needed a job. There have admittedly been a few improvements. A few. But the pay and status are still low.
